In the Balakhtinsky district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, archaeologists have discovered artifacts from the Middle Paleolithic period that are more than 100 thousand years old. They may be older than the finds found on the territory of Krasnoyarsk, the city hall’s telegram channel “GradVestnik” reported.

Archaeologist Yuri Grevtsov said that specialists carried out an examination for conservation and cutting of new areas for coal production in the Balakhtinsky open-pit mine. By law, archaeological surveys are required for this type of work.

“When we started, we noticed that the heights seemed to have been demolished. The glaciers melted and apparently “took” the hills with them. Therefore, the depth of ancient artifacts here is less. In fact, we did not expect any sensation, but I was confused by the quality of the raw materials and the technique used to make the core. I’m an “old paleolithicist”; I’ve held a lot of things in my hands. Usually in Paleolithic times the raw materials were processed well, people already knew what they wanted. But here it was as if it was like this: I’ll take this ugly quartzite, break it, and then take what I liked. At that time, the All-Russian Archaeological Congress was taking place in Krasnoyarsk, I sent photos and videos to my colleagues, they discussed and decided that it was older than the Upper Paleolithic, both geologically and in terms of processing technology,” shared Yuri Grevtsov.

The most ancient monument was considered to be a site in Khakassia and the middle Yenisei. A discovery in the Balakhta region could change the situation.

“Then questions about the settlement of Eurasia and Siberia can expand the picture, maybe people didn’t just settle there. In favorable conditions there is less evolution; an organism can evolve only in difficult conditions. This will change the idea of how people spread across the earth, where they originated, how the merger happened, where they came. The ancient Paleolithic precisely traces the process of formation of man as a whole,” noted Yuri Grevtsov.
