The Hungarian women's national handball team was defeated by Denmark, score 19-21, in round number 3 of the EHF Euro Cup group. The chance for rematch comes quickly on March 8 from 17:00.
- Also today, Romania prevailed in Slovakia, score 32-26, in the other group in the EHF Euro Cup.
Hungary and Denmark participate in the EHF Euro Cup thanks to the results obtained at the previous European Championship. The Nordics ranked second, the Hungarians completed the podium.
In the group of the newly established competition, they also have the Czech Republic and Turkey, clearly inferior national teams. It was clear that the two would advance to the Final Four, only the order was in question and the stake of avoiding Norway in the semifinals.
Hungary – Denmark, dominated by Anna Kristensen
Today, in the Tatabanya hall, 5138 spectators were present. They did not have an offensive show, but the performance of two exceptional goalkeepers. Hungary's Szemerey Zsofi finished with 12 saves, while Denmark Anna Kristensen simply closed the gate, 21 interventions (52.50%).
After 9-9 at halftime, Hungary came out of the booths more determined. He led with 2 goals, but at 15-14 the film broke. The Danes scored 4 times in a row and broke away for a 21-19 triumph.
“The curse continues” was the title chosen by Hungarian journalists from M4Sport at the end of the Tatabanya dispute. The last time Hungary beat Denmark was on December 9, 2015. It was the 55th straight matchup between the two forces. The record is 26 wins for each and 3 draws.
I think the biggest problem today was that we didn't play as a team. They canceled all our offensive play from the World Championship. We tried to solve the situation with individual actions… We only scored 19 goals, I don't even remember when we had such a low efficiency. The fact that we kept them to 21 goals was thanks to Zsófi, but the big picture didn't look at all the way we planned. I can't remember ever playing so badly!
– Vladimir Golovin, the Hungarian coach
Most likely, Helle Thomsen's students will win the group and go to the Final Four of the competition over Romania. If the paper calculations in the last 3 rounds are to be followed, Hungary will face Norway.
