Zelenskiy says the US asked him for help against Iran's drones

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that Ukraine's partners, including the United States, have asked for Kiev's help to defend themselves against Iranian drones, Reuters reports.

“Partners are turning to us, to Ukraine, to ask for help to defend against Shahed drones, with expertise and real operational experience. There were also requests from the United States,” Zelenskiy said in his speech on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials suggested that Kiev could share its expertise with Middle Eastern countries if they could persuade Russia to agree to a ceasefire on the Ukrainian front, where fighting has been ongoing for more than four years.

The US military said on Saturday that it used explosive drones in combat for the first time to attack Iran, thus resorting to a technology used especially in the war between Ukraine and Russia, writes AFP.

“Task Force Scorpion Strike used single-use and low-cost attack drones in combat for the first time,” the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement published on X, referring to a US forces unit established only last December.

The experience gained by the Ukrainian army in the use of drones in combat has made several European countries show their interest in a collaboration with Kiev in this matter.

Romania is among them. On October 2, 2025, the Minister of Defense at the time, Ionuț Moșteanu, announced that our country is in discussions with Ukraine for the creation of a joint venture for the production of drones, a project that would be financed through SAFE, the program to stimulate the production of armaments in the countries of the European Union.
