Day of Arkhip and Philemon
Saints Archippus and Philemon, whose memory is celebrated on this day, are apostles from the age of seventy who lived in the city of Colosse.
In Rus', on Arkhipa (Arkhippa), women were supposed to spend the whole day in the kitchen. It was believed that the more she prepared all kinds of food, the richer the house would be. In addition, peasant families welcomed the orphans and the poor, and treated the poor. They said that the more good deeds you do on this day, the better.
The main dish was a loaf of bread, which was dedicated to the sun and eaten piece by piece, distributed to household members, neighbors and all wanderers passing by. The remaining crumbs had to be thrown behind the back. People believed: if you throw back the bread and salt, you will have bread and salt in the fall.
St. Philemon was popularly called simply – Filya Veshny. From this day on, spring increasingly came into force. The peasants watched the animals: if a seagull flew by, there would soon be ice drift. If you meet a white hare in the forest, it means more snow will certainly fall; but if you come across gray hares, warmth is just around the corner.
