“It hurts to think that I may not return to my paradise.” Yushchenko's daughter-in-law urgently left Cyprus after the explosions

Yushchenko's daughter-in-law noted that she collected only the most necessary things and left the city of Paphos in Cyprus, where she lived. She did not name the place she went to.

“Again, a turning point in our lives. Why did you decide to leave? Because I want the child to understand the word war only when he reads about it in textbooks,” she wrote. “But now I want him to be a happy child who is not afraid of planes, explosions, and does not scream in fear.”

She added that she hopes to return back to Cyprus soon.

“But these days I want to play it safe and wait to see how events will develop,” she added. “For me, this island is a real paradise on earth. How I cried yesterday. It pains me to even think that I may not return to my paradise.”

What's happening in Cyprus

A British air base in Cyprus was attacked by an attack drone on March 2. The Cypriot Ministry of Defense said the drone damaged the runway. As a precautionary measure, the command decided to temporarily relocate military families and some non-key personnel to other areas of the island.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said that security measures have been strengthened around the site. Authorities have not yet specified where the drone was launched from. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said the strike was carried out by a Shahed-type drone. He emphasized that the republic is not participating in military operations and does not intend to become part of them.

This is the first attack on a military base since 1986. The incident occurred amid escalating conflict in the Middle East following US and Israeli strikes on Iran. Earlier, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that London had allowed the United States to use individual British bases to attack Iranian targets.
