Caramitru harshly criticizes Romania's passivity in the US-Iran conflict: “The signal we are giving is pathetic”

Analyst Andrei Caramitru harshly criticizes Romania's lack of a clear position in the current conflict between the United States and Israel, on the one hand, and Iran, on the other. He claims that the Bucharest authorities should have publicly shown their support for the American strategic partner.

His opinion was expressed in a message published on Facebook, in which he talks about the risks of a hesitant attitude. Caramitru states that the pressure from Washington could increase in the coming period and that Romania will have to adopt a firm position in relation to Iran.
“The Americans will ask us to take a position on Iran. The former American ambassadors here have already expressed themselves and say (correctly) that they are totally disappointed that Romania did not express its support for the strategic partner. By the way – the bases here are not used. The signal we give is pathetic“, the analyst said.
In his opinion, the fact that the military bases on the territory of Romania are not involved in the current operations sends a negative message to the allies.
Warning regarding the relationship with Europe and France
In addition to the relationship with the United States, Caramitru also draws attention to Romania's positioning in the European context. He refers to a recent statement by French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the extension of France's nuclear protection to other European states.
“Macron made a historic opening statement to move nuclear weapons to other European countries. Poles and Germans are already talking. We don't – here the pro-Russian factions, and in general the doctrine here, are totally opposed to such a thing. Which will be catastrophic for our relationship with Europe and with France. Now you can no longer be with China and Russia and the USA and France and the whole world. Now you have to decide what you want to do, what is your strategy. To make decisions”pointed out Andrei Caramitru.
In conclusion, the analyst believes that Romania must quickly clarify its strategic direction, both in relation to the United States and its European partners, in an increasingly tense international context.
Amid the escalating conflict, Iran warned European states on Tuesday (March 3) not to side with Israel and the United States, after France, Germany and Britain announced they were ready to defend Gulf countries and strike Iranian military capabilities. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman described any intervention as an “act of war”, claiming that “the fire will engulf the whole world”.
