Hundreds of protesters tried to storm the high-security compound of the United States embassy in Baghdad on Sunday morning after the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to France Presse, which has a journalist on the scene.
“Their attempts have so far been thwarted, but they continue to try” to break through the cordon of security forces, a security source told AFP.
The demonstrators, some of whom waved flags of pro-Iranian armed groups, threw stones at security forces, who responded with tear gas.

Local media reported that there were other protests in the southern provinces of Iraq.
Several Iranian-backed Iraqi armed groups have signaled since Saturday that they will not remain “neutral” and will defend the Islamic Republic.
Among them, the powerful Kataëb Hezbollah group said it would attack US bases in response to the death on Saturday of two of its fighters in airstrikes in southern Iraq.
On Sunday morning, loud explosions were heard near the airport in Erbil, which hosts troops of the US-led anti-jihadist coalition in the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the airport area.

Shortly thereafter, a small pro-Iranian group claimed drone strikes against American soldiers in Erbil.
On Saturday, US-led coalition forces shot down several rockets and explosive-laden drones over the city of Erbil, local authorities said.
