The US abstains from voting on Ukraine. “Who would have thought”


The document confirmed the UN General Assembly's commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, the UN said. It also called for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with the United Nations Charter, as well as an exchange of prisoners and the return of forcibly displaced civilians, including children.

The resolution was adopted by 107 votes, 12 countries voted against and 51 abstained. The countries that abstained from the vote include: USA, Armenia, Hungary, Brazil, India, Kazakhstan and Serbia. Among those who voted against it were: Russia, Belarus, Cuba and Iran.

The United Nations said that before the resolution was adopted in its entirety, the United States requested a separate vote on two paragraphs of the bill, but the request was rejected.

According to AFP The US favored a separate vote on the paragraphs on Ukrainian territorial integrity and international law.

US Deputy Ambassador to the UN Tammy Bruce welcomed the UN's call for a ceasefire in Ukraine. But she stressed that the resolution contains “language that is likely to distract” from rather than support diplomatic efforts to end the war.

The Polish representative spoke

Krzysztof Szczerski, permanent representative of the Republic of Poland to the UN, emphasized that Tuesday's resolution refers to the most fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter and calls for a complete and unconditional cessation of hostilities.

We are convinced that this is the first step – and a sine qua non [konieczny] — to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine – said Szczerski.

He noted that Moscow still persists in its demands for the reconstruction of its neo-colonial sphere of influence in Central and Eastern Europe, while Russian officials deny the Ukrainian people the right to a sovereign domestic and foreign policy. — We cannot agree to this. No delegation should – he added.

Strong words from a former US envoy

Former US envoy for Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg, commented on Tuesday's vote on Platform X. “The UN vote on lasting peace in Ukraine, and we abstained. Who would have thought. The Russian Federation was against the proclamation. Are four years of war not enough? Are missing children, shelling cities and killing innocent people not enough? This isn't a business transaction – it's a war” wrote the general.
