French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of the director of the Louvre in Paris, Laurence des Cars, the Elysée Palace announced on Tuesday. The head of state assessed that the Louvre currently needs a “new impulse”. des Cars' resignation occurred four months after the burglary of the Louvre and the theft of the crown jewels.

In a statement, the Elysee Palace said that the president accepted the resignation, considering it an “act of responsibility” at a time when “the largest museum in the world needs calm and a new, strong impulse to successfully implement major projects.”
As added, these include security and modernization projects as well as the New Revival project, which envisages the construction of a new entrance and a separate room for the famous Mona Lisa.
Des Cars resigned after the theft on October 19, 2025, but the Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati, rejected her resignation.
After leaving the Louvre, according to a statement from the Elysée Palace, des Cars will fulfill a mission under the French presidency of the G7, providing for cooperation between large museums.
On October 19, 2025, the crown jewels of French rulers stored there were stolen from the Louvre. The perpetrators entered the museum from the Seine embankment. They used an external lift to enter through the balcony window, then took a jewel worth EUR 88 million from the display case and fled. The robbery took less than 10 minutes. The burglary suspects were arrested, but the jewels were not found.
