Krasnoyarsk residents were shown what bacteria “live” in old dishwashing sponges (video)

Specialists from Krasnoyarsk Rospotrebnadzor clearly demonstrated why kitchen sponges need to be changed as often as possible. The agency conducted an experiment and showed what happens to the microflora on the surface of the foam rubber after a month of use.
For the study, we took two ordinary dishwashing sponges: one that lasted a week, and the second, which was used for a month. Both samples were transferred to the laboratory of the Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
Specialists inoculated the swabs into Petri dishes with a nutrient medium and placed them in a thermostat. The result was revealing: the sponge, which had been used for a week, remained clean.
But from a sponge that had been in use for a month, colonies of non-pathogenic staphylococci and coliform bacteria, including salmonella, grew.

Rospotrebnadzor reminded that heat, moisture and food debris create an ideal environment for the growth of microbes, and recommended changing kitchen sponges at least once a week.
