A surgeon at Krasnoyarsk Interdistrict Children's Hospital No. 5 was convicted of causing grievous harm to a patient's health. The regional prosecutor's office reported this.

In March 2024, a 6-year-old resident of the regional capital was admitted to a medical facility with acute inflammation of the lower jaw – cheek swelling and toothache required immediate surgical intervention. An oral and maxillofacial surgeon examined the child and performed an operation to remove teeth under anesthesia.

After the operation, the little patient complained of weakness, leg pain and loss of appetite, but despite this, the doctor discharged him. The next day the child's condition deteriorated sharply. The boy was urgently taken to Krasnoyarsk Interdistrict Clinical Hospital No. 20 named after. I.S. Berzon, where he spent 10 days in an artificial coma.

A criminal case was opened against the surgeon who performed the operation on the boy under Part 2 of Art. 118 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (causing serious harm to health due to improper performance of professional duties).

“The forensic examination revealed treatment defects: antibiotic prophylaxis was missed before surgery, the necessary tests were not selected and an anamnesis was not collected. This led to dire consequences. However, the doctor did not agree with the results of the examination and insisted in court that the tactics were correct,” the press service of the supervisory agency reported.

The court took into account the testimony of the child, parents, colleagues, documents and found the maxillofacial surgeon of the Krasnoyarsk Interdistrict Children's Clinical Hospital No. 5 guilty. The man was sentenced to restriction of freedom for 1 year, and was also prohibited from carrying out medical activities for 2 years.
