As noted, road closures have impacted air traffic, with some domestic and international flights canceled in the cities of Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta. Taxis have stopped operating in the latter city. Americans were urged to take shelter or stay in hotels.

Some planes turned back while en route to Mexico

United, Southwest and Alaska airlines, as well as Air Canada and WestJet/Sunwing, announced Sunday the cancellation of flights to Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and Manzanillo. Some planes had to turn back while on their way to Mexico.

On Sunday, media reported that El Mencho, Mexico's most wanted criminal and leader of the dreaded Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) drug cartel, was killed by the army in a security operation. Riots broke out in several states.

The cartel led by El Mencho controlled almost the entire country and was recognized in February by the administration of US President Donald Trump as a terrorist organization. The United States had previously offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture.
