The special envoy of the US president, Steve Witkoff, said that there could be “good news” in the coming weeks regarding the end of the war between Russia and Ukraine, and did not rule out the possibility of a summit between Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Vladimir Putin in the near future.
Donald Trump's special envoy has said that Ukraine and Russia are waging a “senseless war” in which they are fighting over territory.
“You know, everybody uses the word 'dignity'. But what gives you dignity when there's so much bloodshed? They (Ukraine and Russia, ed.) don't seem like they really want to fight each other, and I don't think they do,” Witkoff said in an interview with Fox News, according to Urkainska Pravda.
He suggested that the difficulty in achieving peace lies “at the level of leadership” of the two states.
“Jared (Kusher, Donald Trump's son-in-law, part of the United States delegation, nr) and I hope that we can put some proposals on the table that both sides can discuss, so that in the next three weeks they can get closer to each other and maybe even get to a summit between Zelenskiy and President Putin,” said Witkoff.
He did not rule out the possibility that Donald Trump would also attend the meeting, but added that the US president “doesn't want to come to such a meeting unless he feels he can get things done and get the best result.”
“And he, you know, is in a unique position to do that. So hopefully you'll hear some good news in the coming weeks,” Witkoff added.
We remind you that after the trilateral meetings in Geneva on February 17-18, Zelenskiy declared that he sees progress in the negotiations on the military side, but not on the political side.
On February 20, Zelenski suggested that a new round of negotiations with Russia and the United States on the possible parameters of ending the war could take place before the end of the month.
At the same time, Zelensky accused Russia of delaying the negotiations, which, according to him, should have already reached the final stage.
