Avalanche near a ski resort in Tyrol. A Polish citizen is dead


On Friday approx. 15, an avalanche occurred in Sankt Anton am Arlberg in Tyrol, Austria. “Five skiers were skiing off-piste in the Gampberg area in the Sankt Anton ski resort, at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters,” local officers said.
Three rescue helicopters and a police helicopter were sent to the site. In total, 60 mountain rescuers, 30 firefighters and 20 emergency doctors, three mountain guides with dogs and at least eight policemen took part in the rescue operation.

The officers reported that two people, an American and a Pole, died on the spot. “A 23-year-old Dutchman was seriously injured and airlifted to a hospital in Zams. A 21-year-old Austrian was resuscitated at the scene and airlifted to a hospital in Innsbruck, where he died shortly afterwards,” we read in the statement.
A 19-year-old Irishman was carried away by an avalanche but was not buried by it. “He suffered only minor injuries,” the officers reported.
Another avalanche in Tyrol also killed one person near Nauders. A person also died in Klösterle in Vorarlberg. A lot of snow has fallen in the Alps in recent days, and the avalanche risk remains high. Since the beginning of winter, at least 21 people have died as a result of snowfalls in Austria.
