Recently, during a TV show, Cârțu talked about the day he first contacted the current financier of the Romanian champion, at the 1994 World Championship, when the landowner from Pipera ran out of money and came to borrow from the white-blue official.

Sorin Cârțu met Gigi Becali when he came to ask him for 3,000 dollars

Present on American soil, at the final tournament in which Romania achieved the highest performance, qualification in the quarters, Becali, who used to play roulette at the time, ran out of money and came to borrow a sum that was not small at all. Cârțu, however, fully trusted him, knowing that he would get his money back.

“We are friends with him, with Gigi. Now he doesn't call me, but we used to talk. I told you, we were close like that. The first time we met was in America, at the World Championship, and I was very good friends with Victor and Giovanni Becali, with him less, I didn't know him. He came to America, while I was there, and at that time he was still playing roulette, he ran out of money and came to me to ask for some money, until some friends of his came.

Some friends were coming from Bucharest in a few days. I gave him $2,000 or $3,000. It was money. But I wasn't taking the risk that he wouldn't give me back. I told you, Gigi is a guy who respects his debt, he pays it back, he's not stingy (no stingy) when it comes to money. When my friends came, he gave me the money back.” recalled Sorin Cârțu, on the show “Ask and You!” from orangesport.ro.
