Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated, in a clip posted on Facebook, that Wednesday's decision of the Constitutional Court will not affect the retirement conditions of the military. He also made a comparison between the situation of magistrates and that of the military, saying that they are not “in the situation of delayed files”.
Radu Miruță wanted to clarify for the military that the CCR's decision will not affect their retirement conditions.
“The pensions of the military are not cut because the military are not in the situation where everyone's retirement age is reduced by 13 years, the military are not in the situation with pensions of tens of thousands of euros per month, the military are not in the situation with delayed files or with criminals whose punishments have been prescribed”, said Miruță.
He recalled that the average pension in the Ministry of Education and Culture is only 5,008 lei, and in 2025 the average retirement age of the ministry's employees was 5 years higher than the minimum age at which they would have had the right to retire, but they chose to remain in the system.
“They don't reduce balances, they don't reduce salaries, they don't reduce allowances, they don't reduce the number of soldiers. Yes, they reduce the expenses within the Ministry of Defense which today are not carried out in the most transparent way possible and not in the most orthodox way with regard to the value for which this money is spent. But not affecting the core of the Romanian army, i.e. the human resource”, concluded Miruță.
Later, in an intervention at Digi24, Miruță recalled that the Pensions Law for the military stipulates that, in 2035, they will have the standard retirement age of 65 years.
“The average of those who retired last year was over 52 years and a few months. This means that very few can retire with the maximum reduction of the retirement age and 75% of those who fulfilled their right to retire preferred to stay in the system,” said Miruţă, quoted by News.ro.
He reiterated the proposal that those who remain in the system should be offered a salary surplus, so that the Ministry of Defense does not have to pay the pension of those who leave the Army and the salary of the one they have to replace.
