President Nicușor Dan will give a speech in English at the Washington Peace Council summit convened by Donald Trump, in the context in which Romania is the European country represented at the highest level, as an observer.

The White House has formally invited at least 50 countries to join the Peace Council established by President Donald Trump, and 35 leaders have so far expressed interest. Currently, 26 countries have joined and been designated founding members of the Council, Al Jazeera reports. At least 14 countries declined invitations to join it before its first summit.

The European Union has said it does not intend to join the Council over concerns about the charter, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declined an invitation to Thursday's meeting.

What is the “Peace Council” established by Trump

At the end of January, US President Donald Trump launched the “Council for Peace”, an initiative that, according to him, will aim to resolve global conflicts, including the war in the Gaza Strip, and promote stability, peace and governance “in areas affected or threatened by conflict”.

Several leaders from around the world, including President Nicușor Dan, received a letter inviting them to join this American initiative.

Trump is asking countries seeking a permanent seat on his new Peace Council to contribute at least $1 billion, Bloomberg, which has seen the body's draft charter, reported.
