The discussions about the nuclear weapon, at a level that “the whole world has not been used to until now”, says a former head of Romanian diplomacy: “It is not clear to anyone how far it can go”

Cristian Diaconescu, former minister of foreign affairs, claims that in the “corridor discussions” on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, issues related to nuclear armament were also addressed “quite pressingly” and that the statements of the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about the possibility of a common nuclear defense in Europe “show us the direction, at least rhetorically, in which the great powers are heading”.

The nuclear field “was discussed quite strongly” in the “Munich corridor discussions” and several findings were made, said Cristian Diaconescu, Monday evening, on Digi24.

“France has up to 300 nuclear warheads, if I know correctly, it has politically dedicated this nuclear endowment strictly to national defense (…), it seems that militarily it could cover one more state. Great Britain, the second possessor of nuclear weapons, from the point of view of technologies, is closely linked to American support,” he continued.

“The nuclear weapon is being discussed in a way that the whole world has not been used to before”

The former head of Romanian diplomacy explained that at the present time there are no longer “any kind of multilateral, bilateral treaties that at least will limit, if not effectively”, these nuclear capabilities.

“Also – and not only – the idea related to Ukraine's experience was also discussed in Munich. Ukraine renounces, in Budapest, in 1994, the nuclear weapon, later it is attacked conventionally by a nuclear state – and the question would be, obviously this solution is excluded in the short or medium term, why does the nuclear weapon not have the element of deterrence to be somewhat in balance with that of the aggressor? So the nuclear weapon is discussed in a manner like, I repeat, a whole world has not been used to it until now”, continued Cristian Diaconescu.

He emphasized that “it is not clear to anyone, starting from such topics, how far one can go”.

“The fact that Germany at this moment contemplates such a development shows us the at least rhetorical direction in which the great powers are heading, so not towards the reconfiguration of the world from which we came, but towards another world, in which national interests, as Rubio (the head of American diplomacy, no) once said, must prevail. How? To whose detriment? How fast? How slowly? It remains to be seen,” Cristian Diaconescu said.

The former presidential adviser mentioned that the possibility of creating a “European Security Council, made up of about 12 powerful states” was also discussed in Munich.
