The president of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, claims that without the presence of his party in the current governing coalition “we probably would have had an emergency ordinance today with cuts everywhere” and said that the support of the social democrats for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan “depends a lot” on the budget for 2026 and the priorities that will be agreed upon.
Asked on Monday evening on Romania TV whether Ilie Bolojan “grabs the short-sleeved T-shirt or not”, an allusion to the possible dismissal of the current prime minister, Sorin Grindeanu said: “It depends a lot (…) on the budget”.
“These messianic accents do not impress me. I do not play in this book, so to speak, “Genesis, according to Bolojan”. We are interested in some simple things now, the economic revival, the investment money, the solidarity package. If these things pass, then we will have a budget and then we will still have a prime minister. If we start again with discussions and all kinds of news based on sources, then we will not have a budget and we will withdraw the trust of the prime minister”, he continued the PSD leader.
How does he explain PSD's presence in the coalition he criticizes
Sorin Grindeanu said that “one of the explanations would be the situation today”, when, at the request of the PSD and relevant ministries, the parties in the governing coalition agreed that the medical system, education and employees of public safety structures be exempted from salary reductions.

“If we hadn't been there, in this coalition, today we probably would have had an emergency ordinance with cuts everywhere, and in Health, and in Education, and in the Police, and in the Army, and in all the aforementioned categories. Maybe it's too little, but it's something. You know that's why I think that today (…) can be a beginning, a beginning that I want from now on not only with negative news, but to mean economic recovery, let's talk about investments, let's talk about programs”, Sorin Grindeanu also declared.
Asked about coalition partners criticizing former governments, the PSD leader dismissed the accusations as “propaganda”.
“This is a matter that is also part of a propaganda to which, today and the other day, I saw the former prime minister Marcel Ciolacu giving explanations. Sir, I am proud to have been part of the Ciolacu government, as well as the Ciucă government,” the social democrat also declared.
