Stellantis is quietly resurrecting versions of cars with diesel engines
Now Reuters reports that Stellantis, the owner of Fiat and Jeep, is quietly resurrecting diesel versions of at least seven passenger car and commercial vehicle models in Europe.
“As part of an as yet unannounced strategic shift, the world's fourth largest carmaker, Stellantis, will begin reintroducing diesel versions of its models in Europe at the end of 2025 from various passenger vans to the Peugeot 308 and the DS No. 4 premium hatchback“- writes the agency.

It notes that sales of electric vehicles have fallen below expectations, a shift that comes as Europe relaxes emissions targets that would keep internal combustion engines on the market longer.
In addition, the United States, a major market for Stellantis, is also phasing out electric vehicles under President Donald Trump.
“We have decided to retain diesel engines in our product range and, in some cases, expand our powertrain offerings” – the company said in response to the findings of Reuters. “At Stellantis, we care about growth, which is why we focus on meeting customer needs.”
Is Stellantis changing its electric strategy?
According to data from the European lobby group ACEA, in 2025 diesel vehicles accounted for only 7.7%. new car sales on the continent, while fully electric cars accounted for 19.5%.
Many car manufacturers have completely abandoned diesel engines, while Stellantis itself offers only a few models, whereas five years ago it offered dozens of them.
Reuters reminds that the company previously announced that by 2030, 100 percent of its vehicles should be fully electric. its sales in Europe and 50 percent in the USAhowever, demand in both markets turned out to be lower than expected.
Stellantis has already brought back popular combustion engine models such as the Jeep Cherokee and its powerful eight-cylinder “Hemi” engine as part of a strategy to regain US market share. Last year, the company added a petrol hybrid version of the Fiat 500, as well as an electric version.
Reuters found thatin Europe, where the company's sales decreased by 3.9%. in 2025 and 7.3 percent in 2024, diesel versions return to the market models such as Opel Astra, Opel Combo van, Peugeot Rifter seven-seater SUV, Citroën Berlingo van and others.
