US President Donald Trump's administration has ended its temporary protection status for Yemen, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced on Friday, the latest step by Washington to target immigrants, Reuters reports.
The decision to end humanitarian protection that provides deportation relief and work permits to more than 1,000 Yemeni nationals was made after it was determined that it was against the “national interest” of the US, Kristi Noem said.
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) provides help to people who are already in the US if their home countries experience a natural disaster, armed conflict, or other extraordinary event. The Trump administration has tried to end most enrollment in the program, saying it runs counter to US interests.
“After reviewing the conditions in the country and consulting with the appropriate US government agencies, we have determined that Yemen no longer meets the legal requirements to be designated for Temporary Protected Status,” she said.
About 1,380 Yemeni citizens had this status as of March 31, 2025, according to US Citizenship and Immigration Services. The status was last extended in 2024 and was set to expire on March 3 this year.
