President Nicușor Dan stated on Thursday evening that the AUR leader, George Simion, accompanied by a large delegation, was not received “by anyone” when he went to the United States of America.

The head of state considers this “relevant” to the credibility of these people internationally.

The statements came after the president was asked if he had information about the accusations of the Romanian businessman Dragoș Sprînceană in the US, who claimed that George Simion had lobbied for Romania to be removed from the Visa Waiver program.

“I don't have more information than you have especially on this matter, but what is relevant, in my opinion, is that the same Romanian politician thanked the United States, 8-9 months ago, for removing us from this program, and also that the same politician with a large delegation was not received by anyone in the United States”, said Nicușor Dan.

“This is relevant for the credibility that these people have on the international level,” the head of state also declared, in a press conference held after the informal meeting of the leaders of the European Council, which took place at Alden-Biesen Castle in Belgium, according to Agerpres.

Dragoș Sprînceană was, last year, one of the two special emissaries appointed by the prime minister at the time, Marcel Ciolacu, to lobby for Romania alongside the administration of American President Donald Trump.

Sprînceana (46 years old) is a businessman of Romanian origin settled in the USA, a member of the Republican Party of which Trump is also a member. He is from Constanța, where he graduated from the Faculty of Financial Management and Accounting. Sprînceana moved to the USA in 2002, and his first job was as a security guard at a resort.

Political sources told HotNews last year that Dragoș Sprînceana was one of the important sponsors of Donald Trump's presidential campaign for a second term.

Sprînceana recently claimed that George Simion admitted to her that he lobbied for Romania to be removed from the Visa Waiver program, so that the AUR leader could gain electoral capital against the current government.

In response, AUR denounced the businessman's “personal views”. “We are talking about personal opinions and interpretations made by someone close to former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu and the PSD-PNL government, after it appeared in Adriana Georgescu's transcripts,” said AUR representatives, quoted by Digi24.ro.

What Nicușor Dan says about Romania's participation in Trump's Peace Council

Regarding a possible participation in the Peace Council, initiated by President Donald Trump, on February 19, Nicușor Dan stated that he also discussed this aspect with other European leaders.

“Because there is at the moment – and I estimate that many months from now there will be inconsistencies between the Charter of this organization and the international Charter to which we are a party – we cannot have any other status than that of an observer,” the president said.

“As the invitation was made 4-5 days ago, the invitation was made for the members and at the moment it is being discussed – and now that I am coming from this meeting, I also discussed with other leaders and they are doing the same thing, having the same constraints that we have – we are discussing what the status of the observers at this meeting can be and it is an answer that the organizers must give us and depending on that we will make the decision”, added Nicușor Dan.
