CBAM negotiations must be intensified if we do not want to lose exports
Ukraine risks losing billions of dollars if it does not initiate negotiations with the EU regarding the postponement of the CBAM environmental duty. In the current conditions of war and economic instability, our country does not have sufficient resources to fulfill the strict requirements of the mechanism.
According to Vladyslav Antipov, the general director of the Center for Ecology and Development of New Technologies, after the introduction of the EMS, the export of steel, cast iron, and semi-finished products will be at risk, along with the production and stability of entire industrial regions.
The EU provided for the possibility of taking force majeure into account in the CBAM Regulation (Article 30, Clause 7). And Ukraine has every right to use this exception – because we are at war, and this situation is unprecedented.
“We do not see an active official dialogue with the European Commission, although it is critically needed. It is necessary to insist on postponement – at least until the end of the active phase of the war,” says Antipov.
