The Ukrainian Navy explained why Russia actually stopped using submarines at sea

The video was published on the Telegram channel “Mi – Ukraine”.

“Submarine […] requires compliance with operating and maintenance conditions, and in order to meet these requirements, you must dock it. So they [россияне] said goodbye to a similar submarine of the 636th project “Varshavyanka” in Crimea. It was Rostov-on-Don, which was destroyed by Ukrainian aviation,” Pletenchuk said.

In addition, during the stay, the occupiers lost the same project – also a carrier, already in Novorossiysk, recalled the speaker of the Ukrainian Navy.

“That is, they have two submarines left that are carriers of cruise missiles […] Accordingly, they must take care of this resource, because putting it in service here and now, regardless of whether it is a dry dock, or whether it happens right at the berth, is putting it in danger,” Pletenchuk explained.

According to him, among the surface ships in the Russian Federation, five carriers of Caliber missiles remain in service – three ships of the Buyan project and two frigates – Admiral Essen and Admiral Makarov.

Context

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the morning of February 10, the occupying country of the Russian Federation, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has, among other things, lost two submarines, as well as thousands of units of other military equipment and weapons.

Thus, on December 15, 2025, the SBU reported defeat of a Russian submarine class 636.3 “Varshavyanka” (according to NATO classification – Kilo) in Novorossiysk using underwater drones.

Later, the Russian Black Sea Fleet recognized the Ukrainian attack in Novorossiysk.
