The cause of death of Canadian actress Catherine O'Hara, famous for her roles in the films “Home Alone” and “Beetlejuice”, is now known: her death at the end of January was caused by a pulmonary embolism, according to the death certificate made public on Monday, reports AFP.

The 71-year-old actress was rushed to the hospital on January 30 after experiencing breathing difficulties at her home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Catherine O'Hara was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

In addition to pulmonary embolism, the death certificate lists colon cancer as a secondary contributing factor to her death.

Born in Toronto in 1954, Catherine O'Hara made her film debut in 1980.

In 1988, she played the stepmother of Winona Ryder's character in the Tim Burton-directed film Beetlejuice.

But by far the role for which the general public knows her is the one in “Home Alone”.

In the first two films of the “Home Alone” series, Catherine O'Hara played the role of the mother of Kevin McCallister, the character played by Macaulay Culkin.

In the 1992 film Home Alone 2, Donald Trump makes a brief appearance, decades before he becomes President of the United States.

In 1993, the actress collaborated again with Tim Burton, on the film “L'Étrange Noël de monsieur Jack” (“Mr. Jack's Strange Christmas”).

But contemporary audiences know her best for her portrayal of the eccentric character Moira in the iconic series “Schitt's Creek.” The role earned him an Emmy Award in 2020.

His most recent production was the Apple TV series The Studio (2025), for which he also received an Emmy nomination.

Catherine O'Hara was born and raised in Toronto. She met her husband, set designer Bo Welch, on the set of “Beetlejuice.” The two married in 1992 and had two sons together.
