Strong tomato seedlings will only be produced on these days: accurate sowing calendar for 2026

Growing tomatoes through seedlings remains the main method of harvesting in regions with short summers. Seeds are sown in containers and grown indoors, and at the end of spring they are transplanted into open ground. The process is simple, but for a successful result it is important to choose the right time for sowing and provide basic care.

When to sow tomatoes for seedlings in 2026

Tomatoes are usually sown 60–70 days before planting in open ground. On average, this period occurs from mid-February to mid-April. Sowing too early is undesirable: as the seedlings outgrow, they take root less well in the beds.

The timing also depends on the variety. Late-ripening tomatoes are sown earlier – in February, mid-ripening – in March, early and ultra-early – in late March or early April. The manufacturer's recommendations are usually indicated on the seed packaging.

Favorable days according to the lunar calendar

To increase germination, many gardeners rely on the lunar sowing calendar. In 2026, the most successful days for sowing tomatoes for seedlings are:

  • February – 6–9, 12–14, 18–19, 22–23, 26;
  • March – 4–11, 14, 16, 20–25, 28;
  • April – 1st, 4th–7th, 9th, 12th.

If necessary, sowing is possible on other days, but experts recommend avoiding the periods of the new moon and full moon. Correctly chosen timing helps to obtain strong seedlings and lay the foundation for the future harvest.
