The Ukrainian European champion refused to be photographed with the Russian athlete. Video


After being awarded medals, when group photographs are traditionally taken, Eliy refused to stand next to the citizen of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation and left the pedestal.




As the Ukrainian Karate Federation reported, Eliy won gold in the up to 54 kg weight category with a minimal margin over her principal rival with a neutral status, Kira Kaloeva (1:0).


Context

During February 6–8, the 53rd European Championship among cadets, juniors and youth (U21) was held in the city of Limassol (Cyprus). 1,276 young athletes from 47 countries of the continent took part in the competition. Ukraine was represented by 36 athletes.
