The Russian media, citing witnesses, wrote that Alexeyev was shot in the back with several shots on Friday, February 6, at 7 a.m. (5 a.m. Polish time) when he left the apartment and was walking through the corridor towards the elevator. The general was taken to hospital in Moscow. Russia Today government sources said the general was in a serious condition.

The statement provided by the FSB shows that two Russian citizens have been detained in connection with the case: Lubomir Korba (born in 1960) and Wiktor Wasin (born in 1959). The men were to plead guilty and submit detailed reports on the circumstances of the attack on the first deputy head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

According to the version presented by the Russian government agency Tass, the direct perpetrator of the attack was Lubomir Korba, while Wiktor Wasin was his accomplice. The FSB maintains that Korba was recruited by an SBU officer in August 2025 in Ternopil.
