American skier Lindsey Vonn is in “stable condition” after suffering an injury at the start of the downhill event at the Milan-Cortina Olympics on Sunday, in which she attempted to compete with a “complete tear” of her anterior cruciate ligament, CNN reported.

In a brief statement on social media, the United States Ski and Snowboard Team announced that Vonn suffered an injury but is in stable condition and in good hands with a team of American and Italian doctors.”

In Sunday's event, the three-time Olympic medalist lost control in the opening crossing after about 13 seconds, after cutting the line too tightly, touched a gate with her shoulder and spun mid-air. The 41-year-old athlete was then airlifted off the slopes as the crowd rose to their feet to cheer her on.

Her sister, Karin Kildow, told NBC that the injury was scary.

“He always gives 110 percent, never less, so I know he's put his heart into it,” Kildow said.

“It's a very dangerous sport and there are a lot of variables at play, so I don't know exactly what happened, but it seemed like a pretty hard fall, so we're just hoping for the best,” the athlete's sister said.

Lindsey Vonn has decided to compete in the Olympics despite suffering a previous cruciate ligament tear during last Saturday's Crans-Montana downhill.

At the Olympic Games, he was to participate in the team combined and giant slalom competitions, according to Eurosport.
