CSM Bucharest, amazing victory with the team with the biggest budget in the Champions League. Final assault for 2nd place

CSM Bucharest continues its triumphant journey from the return of the Champions League group stage in handball. The Tigresses crushed the group leader – 40-34 with Brest – and, with two stages to go, they still hope to grab one of the first two positions, which lead directly to the quarters.

After going through Sola (round trip), Odense, Ljubljana and Podravka in the previous games, the Bucharest team also beat Brest today, the team with the biggest budget in the Champions League. Following this victory, CSM reached 16 points, just two behind their opponent from France, the leader of group B.

The girls coached by Bojana Popovici broke away at 9-5 and 10-6 in the middle of the first half and, on the back of a sensational development, entered the cabins with a 4-goal advantage, 21-17. After the break, the Romanian champions constantly maintained their lead of 1-2 goals, in order to finally press the accelerator even harder and distance themselves decisively.

Mandatory wins with Ferencvaros and Ikast

Our girls' goals were scored by Omoregie 9, Friis 7, Trine Oestergaard 7, Maslova 6, Mette Hansen 3, Jaukovic 2, Brnovic 2, Pintea 2 and Inger Smits 1. Evelina Eriksson saved 6 shots (28.57%) and Gabriela Goncalves Dias Moreschi had 5 saves (21.74%). On the other side, the star Ana Viahireva was the best from the guest, with 14 goals.

For CSM Bucharest, another tough nut is coming. Next week, the “tigresses” will play a decisive match in Budapest, with Ferencvaros, the team in 2nd place. With a victory over the Hungarians and another one against Ikast, in the last game, our team could grab 2nd place and implicitly qualify directly for the quarter-finals of the Champions League. The mission is tough, CSM being able to pay for the disastrous developments in the tour, when they lost to Ikast, Brest, Odense, but especially to Ljubljana, a much weaker team in this edition of the competition.
