American actor and director Timothy Busfield has been indicted by a New Mexico grand jury for allegedly sexually abusing twin children, the Albuquerque district attorney's office announced on Friday.

Busfield turned himself in last month after Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman filed a criminal complaint accusing him of abusing twins over two years on the set of Fox's “The Cleaning Lady.” The two boys were seven or eight years old at the time, and now they are 11.

In a video message before turning himself in, the actor known for his role in “The West Wing” claimed that the charges against him were “lies” and that he would be exonerated.

After about a week, a judge ordered Busfield released from jail, ruling that there was insufficient evidence to warrant a pretrial detention.

Indicted on four counts

Allowing prosecutors to proceed with the proceedings, a grand jury voted Thursday to indict him on four counts of soliciting child sex.

The indictment was not public Friday morning, but the district attorney's original complaint alleged that Busfield abused the twins while filming “The Cleaning Lady” in Albuquerque, the largest city in the US state of New Mexico. Busfield served as executive producer of the series and directed several episodes.

Busfield became famous for his roles in popular series such as NBC's “The West Wing,” which ran from 1999-2006, in which he played a White House reporter, or ABC's “Thirtysomething,” in the 1980s, in which he played an advertising agency executive.

He is married to Melissa Gilbert, an actress and former president of the Screen Actors Guild.

Variety recently reported that Busfield will be removed from Amazon MGM's upcoming film You Deserve Each Other in light of the allegations he faces. Additionally, on Jan. 12, NBC pulled an episode of “Law & Order: SVU” in which he guest-starred.
