A hospital was immediately evacuated after a young man arrived at the Emergency Department with a WW1 shell stuck in his rectum

He had a hallucinatory incident at the Hospital in Toulouse, France. A 24-year-old man presented himself at the emergency room complaining of severe rectal pain, but without providing additional details to the doctors. During the examination, the medical staff discovered to their amazement that the patient had inserted an old shell from the First World War into his anus.

According to the publication Le Parisien, the object measured approximately 16 centimeters in length and 4 centimeters in diameter. Due to the risk of the projectile still being active, the authorities decided to evacuate the hospital and urgently called in the gendarmes, police and firemen.

A security perimeter was set up and bomb disposal experts took over the case.

“I intervened to secure a projectile discovered on the premises of the hospital”, the firemen confirmed for the French press.

Fortunately, after checks, the engineers determined that the shell did not present a danger of explosion and neutralized it without incident.

The patient underwent surgery and is still under medical supervision.

Investigative sources said the man could be questioned in the coming days and police plan to open a criminal case for breaching arms and ammunitions legislation.

The French authorities recall that this is not the first situation of this kind. In December 2022, a man over 80 years old arrived at the hospital with a carbine inserted in his rectum, which led to the partial evacuation of the medical unit.
