Cupra Terramar as the flagship SUV. Dynamic design and economical drive

More than a year has passed since the premiere of the Cupra Terramar, but the car is not yet widely seen on our roads. Well, it's not a relatively cheap Cupra Leon. It's a large SUV, the size of a Skoda Kodiaq. Its price is therefore correspondingly higher. However, there is a reason.
The styling of the car certainly does not disappoint. You can see it's a Cupra. And not only because of the characteristic, recognizable logo on the hood, but also because of the body line, which refers to the brand's style. Terramar for dynamic shapes, demonstrating the sporting aspirations of this model. The car certainly looks much more interesting than the Skoda or Volkswagen models corresponding to its dimensions. However, this is the role of this brand in the German group's portfolio.

The interior also shows that we are sitting at the controls of the Cupra. The seats have clearly marked sides and integrated headrests. However, these are not the “buckets” known from sports cars, but comfortable seats with electric controls. In front of the driver there is a large, golden brand logo, placed in the center of the steering wheel. They're hard to miss. There are more of these copper-gold accents in the cabin: on the doors, in the air vents, in the form of frames around the buttons. Interestingly, 20-inch rims are in the same color.

The cockpit itself is original, nice, of course with two screens, one of which is in the middle and serves as an interface for the multimedia system, while the other replaces the instrument cluster. There are large storage compartments on the center console, between the seats, and the gear lever is operated by a stick on the right side of the steering wheel. This is an increasingly common solution in Volkswagen Group cars.

Since the Cupra Terramar is a car that basically competes with the Skoda Kodiaq or Volkswagen Tiguan, we actually have a lot of space in the cabin: both in the front and in the back. You can easily go on a very long journey. This is also facilitated by the spacious trunk of the Terramara, even in its plug-in hybrid version, i.e. with batteries that take up some space.

Cupra Terramar – powerful but economical drive
Under the hood of the tested Cupra was a 1.5 petrol engine. But that's not all, because in the e-Hybrid variant it is supported by an electric unit. In total, we have 204 HP at our disposal. And since it's a hybrid that can be charged from a socket, you can basically drive for weeks without using gasoline. The manufacturer claims that it is possible to travel up to 120 km, but from my experience, a more realistic result is less than 100 km. But that's still a lot. The battery has a significant capacity of almost 20 kWh, and it can be charged with constant current of 50 kW (then it takes less than 30 minutes, but it costs a lot).

The car's performance is very good: you can accelerate to 100 km/h in just over 8 seconds, and the maximum speed is 205 km/h. Of course, for this you need to use the full power of both power sources, thus forcing the Cupra to run the petrol engine. In the city, when we drive slowly, the car runs without fuel and only uses the electricity stored in the batteries. However, when there is no electricity, the car switches to hybrid mode and… continues to drive economically. In the city, fuel consumption is about 5 l/100 km, at 120 km/h – about a liter more, and at 140 km/h we will be closer to 7 liters per hundred. An excellent result for a 204-horsepower SUV.

We can therefore say with a clear conscience that the Cupra Terramar in the tested version is an economical but dynamic car. Moreover, it is very pleasant to drive. It behaves predictably, takes corners willingly, and slight body tilts are not stressful. You can also count on good absorption of bumps, even though I drove the version with 20-inch rims.

Cupra Terramar – is it worth buying?
Cupra Terramar is a very nice SUV, with a dynamic body line and an original interior. Fortunately, the nice design does not reduce functionality – in this respect, the interior of the Cupra deserves a very good rating. However, it is worth considering the car's drivetrain. Yes, the plug-in hybrid is powerful, and it can drive around the city without turning on the combustion engine. As long as you don't exceed the battery range, you can travel like this for weeks, even in winter. By charging the car at night. However, if we do not have this option, it is better to choose the regular Terramara versions. Cheaper, with a slightly larger trunk, and equally refined.
