Trump is becoming a problem for the far right. Old alliances begin to weigh heavily

Why are we writing about this?

The change in tone towards Trump shows that his policies are beginning to harm those groups that previously saw him as an ideological ally. As the New York Times emphasizes the slogan “America First”, attractive to many European populists, today causes problems when it attacks the interests and ambitions of European countries.

Ties with Trump are a ballast for the far right in Europe

As the New York Times notes, far-right leaders are increasingly publicly criticizing Trump. Nigel Farage, head of the British Reform UK party, called his statements about the need to take Greenland “a very hostile act”. Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni condemned Trump's words about the allegedly insignificant role of European soldiers in Afghanistan, considering them to be disrespectful towards allies. Similarly Jordan Bardella, leader of the French National Rally, said Trump's position towards Greenland is “unacceptable”and described the threats of new tariffs on French goods as blackmail. In Germany AfD co-chair Alice Weidel criticized the US operation in Venezuela as contrary to the promise not to interfere in the affairs of other countries.

“NYT” notes that for parties that recently praised Trump, openly admitting to a close relationship with him has become “treacherous and dangerous”especially since polls show many potential far-right voters assessing his policies negatively.
