The president of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, declared, on Antena 3, that Romania should participate in the Peace Council and appreciates that “the costs are never too high” to ensure national security. He said that our country should also pay a billion dollars for permanent membership, beyond the initial 3-year term, billion provided in the offer sent by Donald Trump to the 60 countries he invited.

“This Peace Council, or the idea of this Council started from a happy experience, the peace in Gaza. This is where everything started. As the name says, that experience is wanted to be extended. However, we see President Macron, or we hear his speech, also in Davos, in which he said that last year, there were at least 60 conflicts worldwide. Why is something like this needed? That would be the starting image. So, we start from an experience, yes we say, positive, Gaza”, said Sorin Grindeanu, quoted by News.ro.

According to him, accepting the invitation made by President Donald Trump, “is not about servility, but about realism”.

“When the main provider of security for your country, in this case for Romania, sends you an invitation to participate in a Peace Council, you say yes, without reservations and the costs are never too high, as long as we are talking about security. Well, and yes, sums are found, it's about a billion, if I'm not mistaken,” added the PSD president.

Sorin Grindeanu added that we are primarily talking about Romania's strategic partner.

“I think that so far the president has acted correctly. In the sense that I know, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow there is a European Council, he probably wants to see the points of view of the others in the Council, of the other 26 members, after which we have to express ourselves, because the timing is not good in this point of view,” Grindeanu said.

Romania was invited to become a member of the “Council for Peace”, through a letter addressed by US President Donald Trump to President Nicusor Dan, the Presidential Administration reported on Sunday.

The same invitation was addressed by Donald Trump to several states. A $1 billion contribution secures permanent membership in the Trump-led council.

President Nicusor Dan announced on Tuesday that he has started an in-depth analysis process of the content and implications of the Board of Peace Charter, in relation to the international commitments previously assumed by Romania, this evaluation having as its objective the establishment of the degree of compatibility of the new initiative with the existing obligations of the Romanian state and the identification of the optimal ways through which Romania can contribute to achieving our common goal of consolidating peace in the world.
