Novak Djokovic (38 years old, #4 ATP) went through 3 sets against Francesco Maestrelli (23 years old, #141 ATP), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, thus qualifying for the 3rd round at the Australian Open. The Serb is one victory away from a historic milestone.
In the 1st round against Pedro Martinez, Djokovic recorded his 100th main draw victory at the Australian Open. Today came success #101 and overall victory #399 in Grand Slam tournaments.
Novak Djokovic made another round at the Australian Open
Djokovic quickly pulled away to 5-2, but the Italian slowed him down later, saving 6 set points before Nole claimed that first act.
In the second set, Djokovic managed a break on his opponent's first serve, which gave him the composure he needed to continue to dominate, and then, with a second break in the seventh game, he finally broke Maestrelli's resistance.
The third set provided a bit more excitement, although Djokovic once again dominated the court, leading 4-1 with two early breaks. When it looked like he was heading to close out the match, the Serbian suddenly lost his focus and allowed one of the breaks to be recovered for 4-2. That, however, was all Maestrelli could do.
Interestingly, Maestrelii managed to double Djokovic's aces, 10-5. The Serbian boasts an incredible percentage of points won on the first serve, 86%.
At a victory of the 400 milestone
In the third round, Djokovic will face Dutchman Botic Van De Zandschulp, world number 75. If he wins that game too, he'll reach 400 Grand Slam wins!
Van De Zandschulp has so far passed Juncheng Shang and Brandon Nakashima.
