Robert Bratu said that when he felt the sudden braking of the kit, he remembered his grandfather's advice and managed to adopt a position that reduced his impact.

“I felt that he braked hard and I was in a straight line. My grandfather was a train driver and it seemed very strange to me. And I put my feet on the seat in front, I said: “Either we hit each other, or something happened” (…) after a few seconds the bang came. What can I tell you… Horrible!”, reported the Romanian, for TVR.

He suffered only minor injuries and says he had “very lucky”. After recovering from the shock, he tried to render aid to other injured passengers. “I have moments when I feel like crying”he confessed.

According to the latest information, the toll of the tragedy reached 41 dead and over 120 injured.

We recall that two trains collided in the area of Adamuz, near Córdoba, after a train heading to Madrid derailed and ended up on the opposite track, hitting another train traveling in the opposite direction.

Rescuers continued their search into the second night as well, with fears that there could be more people trapped under the debris.

Spanish authorities are investigating a possible faulty weld on one of the rails, with a section of around 30 centimeters at the center of the investigation.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the toll was not yet final and the investigation could take at least a month, describing the incident as “extremely strange”.

Spain has decreed three days of national mourning, and King Felipe and Queen Letizia are due to arrive at the scene of the tragedy on Tuesday to pay their respects to the victims.
