During the press conference, Mamdani referred to President Donald Trump's announcement to suspend federal funds for the so-called cities of sanctuaries. – Our values and our law cannot be a bargaining chip. I will always defend this city and every person who calls it home, even in the face of threats from the federal administration to withhold funds, said the mayor, as quoted by ABC News.

Mamdani also expressed “outrage” over the Immigration and Customs Enforcement's detention of a municipal official of Venezuelan origin. He demands his immediate release.

ABC News emphasizes that Mayor Mamdani is working to implement election announcements. He has already signed, among others: first implementing regulations and announced the nominations of his closest collaborators. He also announced a plan to introduce universal care for children aged 2 years.

The New York Times draws attention to the growing tensions over the composition of the City Hall leadership. The newspaper reminds that Mamdani won the Democratic Party primaries without significant support from the African-American community, which he publicly admitted, promising to improve these relations.

Meanwhile, of the five deputy mayors he has appointed, none are black and only one is of Latino descent. Tyquana Henderson-Rivers, a well-known black political consultant, called it harmful that “there is no black deputy mayor” of New York.

“He no longer has the best relationship with the black community, and it seems like we're not important to him if we're not in his immediate decision-making circle,” Henderson-Rivers told the New York Times.
