Arne Slot's side remain winless in the Championship in 2026. After draws against Leeds (0-0), Fulham (2-2) and Arsenal (0-0), the Cormorants made yet another domestic misstep, 1-1 with penultimate Burnley.

Liverpool, kept in check at Anfield by modest Burnley

The reigning Premier League champions had a huge chance to open the scoring in the 32nd minute when centre-back Andrew Madley struck from 11 meters after Florentino fouled Cody Gakpo.

Dominik Szoboszlai, the Cormorants' most important player this season, was the one who took responsibility from the spot, but his execution hit the crossbar of Dubravka's goal.

Even so, Liverpool took the lead at the booths. Florian Wirtz opened the scoreboard at Anfield in the 42nd minute of the meeting after a shot sent close to the net from inside the box.

However, the guests managed to restore the tie in the second act, precisely in the 65th minute. The Portuguese Florentino made up for the mistake committed in the first half, making the decisive pass to Marcus Edwards' goal.

Until the end, Arne Slot's students chased the winning goal, wasting opportunity after opportunity, and in the end, the final score of the game remained 1-1.

Thus, Liverpool recorded their fourth consecutive draw in the championship and, more than that, this result comes with a negative premiere for the club in the Premier League. Specifically, in the current season, The Cormorants have failed to beat any newly promoted team at home (Leeds, Sunderland and now Burnley), something that had never happened before in their history.

The team from Anfield accumulated 36 points and returned to the 4th position in England, having a minimum lead over Manchester United, the holder of the 5th place, and two lengths of the Chelsea, the team in the 6th place.

On the other hand, Scott Parker's band has only reached the milestone with number 14 and is still ranked in the penultimate position of the ranking.

In the next stage of the Premier League, Liverpool will perform at Bournemouth's ground, while Burnley will receive the visit of Tottenham.

Until then, however, the English champion will face Olympique Marseille, at the Stade Velodrome, in the Champions League. The game will take place on Wednesday, January 21, from 22:00.
