The French daily “Le Monde” assessed on Friday that there is no justification for the official US position regarding control over Greenland. He believes that President Donald Trump's interest in the island is becoming irrational and finds his attitude disturbing.

In an editorial, “Le Monde” reminds that Greenland is subject to a NATO member state – Denmark, whose sovereignty over the island was recognized by the USA over a hundred years ago. Denmark itself has always supported the United States, and the treaty concluded by both countries allows the US to strengthen the American base in Greenland, the daily points out. He also notes that Denmark has expressed a desire to increase its military presence on the island.
“Rejecting these facts speaks to the irrational nature that Greenland is now taking on for Donald Trump,” says Le Monde. “By insisting on taking control of the island, the President of the United States is showing reprehensible and condemnable irresponsibility. It is only regrettable that no one around him has the will, or rather the courage, to tell him so,” the daily says.
He expresses his belief that the tension around the island is caused “by one man – Donald Trump.” “Le Monde” refers to the US president's statement in the New York Times about owning Greenland. Trump said at the time that it was “psychologically necessary for success.” This explanation – according to the daily – “is dizzying.” “Of all the reasons chaotically put forward to justify such a violation of an ally's sovereignty (…) this one is undoubtedly the most consistent with the president's character, which makes it the most disturbing,” says Le Monde.
