Morocco went through difficult times, but reached the much-dreamed-of final of the Africa Cup of Nations. Goalkeeper Bounou saved the home team in the semi-final against Nigeria. Al Hilal's goalkeeper caused an explosion of joy by saving two penalties. After 0-0 at the end of 120 minutes, Morocco prevailed 4-2 in penalty kicks.
Morocco will meet Senegal, who beat Egypt 1-0.
Nigeria had a few chances in the first half but failed to convert them. Top striker Victor Osimhen was invisible and was annihilated by the Moroccan defence.
But even the hosts were not able to break the ice in attack. Striker Ayoub El Kaabi was substituted just before the end of regulation time. Oussama Targhalline took his place. PSV's key player Ismael Saibari was also invisible throughout the match.
Extra time and penalties in Nigeria – Morocco
Due to ineffective attacks, extra time was needed to tie the two teams. The packed stadium in Rabat was dreaming loudly of the final against Senegal, but it took high emotions and the hope that the penalty shoot-out would go in their favour.
Morocco looked to be quickly on the back foot when Hamza Igamane's shot was saved by Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. But Bounou made his presence felt. The Moroccan goalkeeper saved the next penalty and was the best in Nigeria's fourth execution as well. It was Chukwueze and Onyemaechi who could not beat Bounou.
