According to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the shooting occurred during the stop of a vehicle belonging to a man “linked to the international prostitution ring Tren de Aragua and involved in the recent shooting in Portland.” The man allegedly tried to run over the officers.
“The driver of the vehicle is likely a member of the brutal Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. When agents revealed themselves to the people in the vehicle, the driver used the vehicle as a weapon and tried to run over the officers,” the statement said. “Fearing for his life and safety, one of the officers fired shots in self-defense. The driver drove away with a passenger, fleeing the scene.”

The Portland FBI's X account originally said it was investigating a shooting that killed two people, but the tweet was later deleted.
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson condemned the incident in a statement. “Just one day after the horrific violence in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, our Portland community is now dealing with another deeply disturbing incident… We cannot sit idly by as constitutional rights erode and bloodshed escalates,” Wilson said. “As mayor, I am calling on ICE to cease all operations in Portland until a full investigation is completed,” he added.
