The Prime Minister of Greenland's autonomous government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, called for calm after repeated statements by US President Donald Trump, who in recent days emphasized Greenland's strategic importance and suggested that the island could come under US influence.

In a press conference organized on Monday, January 5, in Nuuk, Jens‑Frederik Nielsen wanted to clarify that the situation does not justify panic and that the dialogue with Washington remains open.

“We are not in a situation where the United States could conquer Greenland. That is not the situation, so there is no need to panic. We need to restore the good cooperation that we had.” he stated.

He also rejected any comparison between Greenland and Venezuela, where the US recently conducted a military operation against President Nicolás Maduro, highlighting the island's stability and democratic tradition.

“Our country is not suitable for comparison with Venezuela. We have been a democratic country for many years,” pointed out Jens‑Frederik Nielsen, announcing that he intends to deepen relations with NATO and maintain a direct line of communication with the United States, thus avoiding mediating the topics before the official discussions, notes Agerpres.

Official statements and reactions

On the other hand, however, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen admitted that he takes the US intentions seriously, emphasizing that any action must respect the international order and the principles of democracy, and warned that he will not tolerate any pressure that could destabilize NATO alliances.

“If one NATO country attacks another NATO country, everything will be over. Including our NATO and, consequently, the security it has provided since the end of World War II,” she explained, stating that Denmark has allocated almost 12 billion euros for Arctic security and that external threats will not be tolerated, and Greenland will retain its autonomy.

Aaja Chemnitz, Greenland's representative in the Danish parliament, believes, for her part, that it is essential that the population is prepared for any scenario.

“Whether it's a broken communications cable or threats from Trump, the Greenlandic people must be prepared.” she stated.

All these statements come after Donald Trump recently resumed the topic of Greenland, showing that the island is surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships and stressing that Denmark “will not be able” to guarantee its security.

“I don't want to talk about Greenland. Let's talk about Venezuela, Russia, Ukraine… We'll deal with Greenland in two months. Let's talk about Greenland in 20 days,” he stated, raising concerns.

At the same time, Trump's close advisors, such as Stephen Miller, stated that
“The United States should have Greenland”
. Asked directly about possible military intervention, Miller said: “There's no need to think about it or even talk about it. No one is going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.”

The controversy was also amplified, however, by his wife Katie Miller's post on X, where she shared a map of Greenland colored in the colors of the American flag with the caption “coming soon”.
