Salvamont Argeș issued a warning, Monday evening, and announced that all tourist routes in the mountainous area of the county that go up to the ridge routes or the actual ridge routes of the Făgăraș, Piatra Craiului, Leaota and Iezer-Păpușa mountains are closed.
At Bâlea Lac, the snow reached one meter.
“At this moment, the snow layer measures 100 centimeters in the Bâlea Lac-Cota 2000 Transfăgărășan sector. Temperatures in the ridge area will remain very low, visibility is reduced,” said Salvamont Argeș.
Mountain rescuers say that at altitudes above 1,800 meters “in the next few days, consistent snow will be reported, which will locally increase the layer by more than 20 cm and isolated even more”.
“The strong wind of the last few days has deposited the light, powder-type snow in the sheltered areas in consistent deposits, and especially near the ridges, numerous wind slabs have formed on the surface. In depth, a layer of cup-type crystals is encountered, with which the layers of recent snow have low adhesion and over which they can slide easily. Above the ground, we find a hardened layer,” the statement added.
Salvamont Argeș says that “in the upper part of the snow we will encounter a layer with low resistance and weak adhesion to the lower layer, which will exceed 40-50 cm in some places”.
“On inclined slopes, there will be the risk of triggering medium-sized and even large avalanches, which engage the recent snow or the wind plates formed in the area of the ridges, both spontaneously, but especially with overloads – HIGH RISK 4”, notes Salvamont Argeș.
“Significant snow” and at lower altitudes
Salvamont Argeș says that at altitudes below 1,800 meters “the snow has relatively low dimensions, but significant snowfalls are expected in the next interval, which will deposit 10-20 cm of snow locally”.
“Some flows or small avalanches will be possible at altitudes of 1500-1800 m – MODERATE RISK 2”, the release states.

The rescuers explained that “the path line of the marked routes is not visible due to the snow, posing orientation and safety problems”, and “in several areas there are large ledges facing east, which can break under the weight of the climbers or even under their own weight”.
“Under these conditions, all the tourist routes in the mountain area of Argeș county that go up to the ridge trails or the actual ridge trails of the mountains Făgăraș, Piatra Craiului, Leaota and the Iezer-Păpușa massif are completely closed”, stated Salvamont Argeș.
“In case of need, tourists in difficulty must call the National Salvamont Dispatch, using the phrase 0salvamont, i.e. 0725826668 or the emergency number 112. Also, from the Salvamont National Dispatch, information can be requested regarding the state of the tourist routes”, the rescuers also declared.
