The party led by George Simion asks the Presidency, the Government and the Parliament to declare 2026 as the “Year of America in Romania”, in the context in which the USA is celebrating its 250th anniversary. AUR claims that the political, strategic and economic decisions of Donald Trump had a direct impact on “the defense of democratic values in an increasingly unstable international context”.

In a press release on Monday, the AUR says that Romania's relationship with the USA is “essential” for national sovereignty, but also that “any major decision adopted by Bucharest must first be consulted with Washington”.

“Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, considered in 2026 the most important political leader at the global level, the American influence was felt both on the international stage and in the relationship with the European Union”, according to a press release of the AUR party, through which the political formation proposes that 2026 be declared the “Year of America in Romania”.

The message comes two days after Nicolas Maduro, the 63-year-old president of Venezuela, was captured in a US special forces operation. He had been in power for more than a decade, during which the South American country experienced a dramatic involution towards authoritarianism and faced a collapse in living standards

To mark the “Year of America in Romania, AUR announces that it will organize conferences, public debates, cultural or educational events dedicated to young people, in order to convey “a clear message of respect and friendship towards the American nation and the American people”.

AUR's arguments for the “Year of America in Romania”

In the document sent to the press, AUR claims that the new Security Strategy of the United States is proof that the US “explicitly assumes the role of the main defender of political freedoms, democracy and freedom of expression in Europe, at a time when these fundamental rights are increasingly under pressure”.

In the same document, the party claims that Romania's relationship with the USA is “essential for maintaining political pluralism, freedom of opinion and national sovereignty”, but also that “any major decision adopted by Bucharest in this context – including regarding the developments in Ukraine – must be consulted first of all with Washington”.

AUR claims that declaring 2026 as the “Year of America in Romania” would help to strengthen the strategic relationship between the two states and even to promote economic cooperation and investments in Romania.
