UDMR draws attention that “Russia could use” US intervention in Venezuela in the context of peace negotiations with Ukraine

Russia is showing “cynicism and hypocrisy” when it brings up international law regarding the US detention of Nicolas Maduro, believes UDMR leader Csoma Botond, in a first reaction of the political formation on the subject, for HotNews.
UDMR leader Csoma Botond says Maduro was not a legitimate president.
“There are clear indications that the elections were falsified. The European Union, democratic countries in the world did not recognize the elections there. I think Romania should speak out for a de-escalation and a quick transition to a legitimate democratic regime that serves the interests of the Venezuelan people,” Csoma Botond told HotNews.
“I guess the federal judge won't look at how Maduro was brought before the Court”
Csoma Botond reminds that Maduro is facing criminal charges related to terrorism and drug trafficking: “The Federal Court in New York has jurisdiction to try these charges.”
“I assume that the federal judge will not analyze the way in which Maduro was brought before the Court. There is legal precedent in this sense, the leader of Panama, General Noriega, had been arrested by the Americans, tried and convicted in the United States based on similar charges, at that time the American judiciary did not reflect on the way in which the general was brought to American soil,” said the UDMR representative.
He says that Russia “showed hypocrisy and hypocrisy when it brought up international law in relation to American intervention, given the long and bloody war it has waged against Ukraine.”
“On the other hand, tactically and even strategically, Russia could use this American intervention in order to achieve its goals in Ukraine, bringing into question the narrative regarding the spheres of influence of the great powers, which could make it difficult to achieve a just peace in Ukraine”, concluded Csoma Botond.
What reactions did other Romanian politicians have to the situation in Venezuela
HotNews contacted the representatives of several parliamentary political parties to find out how they stand in relation to the recent events in Venezuela and how they think Romania should stand. So far, neither President Nicușor Dan (who leads the country's foreign policy) nor other representatives of the Presidential Administration have had a public position after the US launched the operation in Venezuela.
Romania should position itself towards the situation in Venezuela, taking into account the fact that our country has a strategic partnership with the USA, believes one of the leaders of AUR, Petrișor Peiu, in a statement for HotNews.
Petrișor Peiu said that Nicolas Maduro, detained by the Americans, eliminated some of his opponents in 2018 and argued that the situation was similar to what happened in Romania in December 2024, when the presidential election was annulled.
The first reaction from AUR after the events in Venezuela. A party leader says Nicolas Maduro has eliminated some of his opponents “just like the power in Bucharest in December 2024”
“The decision to bring Nicolas Maduro to justice can stop the growth of the scourge of drug trafficking, it can give Venezuelans the chance for a good future in prosperity, but it is also a decision that brings us to the table of diplomatic discussions to reaffirm and protect international rules”, was the reaction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Oana Țoiu.
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared, on Saturday evening, that he did not discuss the situation in Venezuela with President Nicusor Dan, but that he is following what is happening in this country, whose leadership Romania has not recognized, so our country does not have a consulate in Caracas.
He added that Romania will be in line with the position of the European Union.
