“Romania should be clearly on the side of its strategic partner, the United States”, says a PSD leader, vice-president of the European Parliament

The Vice-President of the European Parliament and at the same time the First Vice-President of the PSD Victor Negrescu says that Romania must have a “balanced, firm and consistent position with the democratic values it constantly supports, as well as with the strategic partnership it has with the United States and the North Atlantic Alliance” regarding the capture and detention of Nicolas Maduro by the USA.
He reminds that the regime in Venezuela is not democratic and that the last elections were not recognized by the international community.
“There are serious and documented allegations of human rights violations, political repression and ties to organized crime, including drug trafficking. These realities cannot be ignored,” Victor Negrescu told HotNews.
“Romania should be clearly on the side of its strategic partner, the United States”
The Vice President of the European Parliament believes that Romania must be on the side of the US in this context.
“At the risk of sounding cynical, in the world we live in today, if we want support from the US and American troops in our region, we must accept and support the security needs of our partners in other areas of the globe. What happens in other corners of the world ends up, sooner or later, affecting us as well”, believes the politician.
He emphasizes, however, that it is important “that any action be anchored in international law and not create arbitrary precedents.”
“That's why the call of the European leaders, which I'm sure will be supported by the United States, for a democratic transition is correct, especially since in Venezuela there are leaders and an opposition that are really appreciated and supported by the population,” said the PSD first vice-president.
Impact on Russia-Ukraine peace talks: “Not decisive, but not completely irrelevant”
Asked if he thinks the US action in Venezuela could have a negative impact on the US-led peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, Victor Negrescu said the short answer is that it “doesn't have a decisive impact, but it's not completely irrelevant either”.
“The relationship between Russia and the Maduro regime was political and symbolic, part of a wider front challenging the international democratic order. However, the Venezuelan file is secondary for Moscow, compared to the major stake of the war in Ukraine,” Negrescu believes.
The vice-president of the European Parliament says that Russia may now use this episode “rhetorically” to accuse the US of “double standards” or “geopolitical pressure”.
“We are already seeing this propaganda spread through social networks. It is interesting that they are also using the channels of sovereignists in Romania, which until recently promoted Donald Trump's policy,” Negrescu said.
“I do not believe that the situation in Venezuela will block or derail the peace negotiations”
Victor Negrescu claims, however, that the stakes of the peace negotiations in Venezuela “are much too high”, so he does not believe that the situation in Venezuela will block or divert them.
“Dialogue channels are already working, even if they are tense,” believes the PSD first vice-president.
“It is more important that the US and European partners send a clear message: the peace negotiations in Ukraine are aimed at stopping a war of aggression, and the files on authoritarian regimes in other regions of the world cannot become a bargaining chip. The Western bloc must remain united on all international policy files”, according to him.
What reactions came from AUR, PNL and UDMR after the USA detained Nicolas Maduro
HotNews contacted the representatives of several parliamentary political parties to find out how they stand in relation to the recent events in Venezuela and how they think Romania should stand.
Romania should position itself towards the situation in Venezuela, taking into account the fact that our country has a strategic partnership with the USA, believes one of the leaders of AUR, Petrișor Peiu, in a statement for HotNews.
Petrișor Peiu said that Nicolas Maduro, detained by the Americans, eliminated some of his opponents in 2018 and argued that the situation was similar to what happened in Romania in December 2024, when the presidential election was annulled.
“Romania is part of the European Union and it is as natural as possible that our position is circumscribed by the EU position. On the other hand, the USA is our main strategic partner”, says PNL Senator Daniel Fenechiu, in an interview given to HotNews.
Related to the legitimacy of the action carried out by the US, which overthrew Nicolas Maduro, the politician speaks from a pragmatic perspective, about “priorities for the health and hygiene of the world”.
Russia is showing “cynicism and hypocrisy” when it brings up international law regarding the US detention of Nicolas Maduro, believes UDMR leader Csoma Botond, in a first reaction of the political formation on the subject, for HotNews.
