In Caracas, on the night from Friday to Saturday (in the morning Polish time), numerous explosions could be heard. Clouds of smoke and flying helicopters appeared over the capital of Venezuela. As it turned out, it was the result of the Americans' actions. Donald Trump said via social media that the US “successfully conducted a large-scale strike operation against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who was captured and deported from the country together with his wife.”

What charges were brought against Maduro?
Is there a state of emergency in Venezuela?
What were the results of the last presidential elections in Venezuela?
Maduro's government has declared a state of emergency throughout the country. The country's authorities accused the US of “military aggression”. In turn, US Attorney General Pam Bondi reported on the X website that the Venezuelan dictator and his wife were indicted in a court in the Southern District of New York. As she explained, Maduro “was charged with drug-terrorist conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine weapons and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine weapons and destructive devices against the United States.” Formally, the US has no jurisdiction over Maduro because he is not an American citizen.
Detention of Nicolas Maduro by the Americans. “There is no war”
According to prof. Zbigniew Lewicki, the leader of Venezuela had already reached an agreement with the Americans and allowed himself to be deported from the country. The expert emphasizes that in the case of US actions in Venezuela, we cannot talk about war. — This is not any US attack on Venezuela. There is no US-Venezuelan war. This is simply the removal by the United States of a dictator who has committed a number of shameful acts – comments the Americanist in an interview with Onet.
Prof. Lewicki emphasizes that Maduro led to a huge increase in poverty among the Venezuelan people during his rule. He also mentions the dictator's involvement in drug smuggling and the general reluctance he caused among some representatives of other South American countries. The Americanist believes that the leader arrested by the Americans had previously reached a settlement with them.
Did Maduro reach an agreement with the Americans? Prof. Lewicki has no doubts
– He agreed to a settlement earlier. He only negotiated the scope of immunity and who was to be covered by it. He had very high expectations, but the Americans did not agree to it. I have the feeling that he simply allowed himself to be deported so that he could now be seen as a victim of the system, as someone who is persecuted by the Americans, and not as someone who reached an agreement with Washington. I can't imagine it having a different character or course, he explains.
According to information provided by Senator Mike Lee of Utah, Secretary of State Marco Rubio “does not expect further action in Venezuela.” He was supposed to hear it from him during their phone conversation. The reason is that Maduro was arrested. Prof. Lewicki believes that such announcements from the American administration can definitely be considered credible.
— Absolutely, it was about removing Maduro. This has happened and now the question arises what will happen next. Will the results of the last elections be recognized or will new elections be organized? This remains to be seen, but there is a chance for Venezuela to rebuild itself as the state it was before Maduro and Hugo Chavez, sums up the Americanist.
The last presidential elections in Venezuela took place in 2024. According to official results, Maduro won, with 51.95 percent. votes. However, this result was questioned by the Venezuelan opposition, which supported the candidacy of Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. This one was supposed to get just over 43%. votes.
