According to a report published a week ago by the US-based organization HRANA (Human Rights Activists Information Agency), at least 1,922 executions were carried out in Iran in 2025, which is more than twice as many as in the previous year and the most in over a decade. At least 10 executions were carried out in public.
In early December, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning human rights violations in Iran, with particular emphasis on the death penalty. Mai Sato, the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, warned that the scale and secrecy of the executions could amount to crimes against humanity.
