“The first such clear declarations”
The Prime Minister emphasized that there were real reasons to hope for an end to the war, although – as he noted – it was still far from full certainty. In his opinion, the key event of recent days is declaration of the United States of readiness to participate in security guarantees for Ukraine after the conclusion of peaceincluding through the possible presence of American troops on the border or contact line with Russia. Tusk said that these are the first such clear declarations from the US, which may increase the chances of success of the talks.
According to “Rzeczpospolita”, the Prime Minister pointed out that from Ukraine's point of view, a possible agreement would require territorial compromises. He emphasized that President Zelensky shows good will in this matter, but any decisions regarding the territory would have to be accepted by the public in a referendum. However, the condition for such consent would be credible and lasting guarantees of security after the end of the war.
Room in a few weeks?
Tusk noted that for the first time since the beginning of Russia's full-scale aggression, we can talk about a real prospect of peace on the horizon. coming weeksnot months or years. For Poland – due to its geographical location and geopolitical situation – it would be, as he said, an exceptionally positive event.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of close cooperation between institutions constitutionally responsible for foreign policy. He informed that he had received detailed information from the president about his conversations with Donald Trump after the meeting at Mar-a-Lago and announced further exchange of information.
Priority for talks with the president
At the same time, he noted that the US administration prefers contacts with presidents, while in Europe the main partners remain governments, which – in his opinion – requires precise coordination of activities.
Finally, Tusk declared his readiness to fully cooperate with the president, also announcing actions aimed at ending the dispute over military nominations. As “Rzeczpospolita” writes, the Prime Minister did not rule out that it would be necessary to make joint decisions regarding Ukraine and the security of the region in January.
